Norman Thelwell is the unofficial chronicler of the British countryside. He is especially well known and loved for his drawings of little girls on pony-back.
Thelwell has also become closely associated with the Pony Club, the organization devoted to educating young people about horses which operates in more than 30 countries.
Thelwell, who died in 2004, published his first collection, Angels On Horseback, in 1957. After that he published about 30 books and drew for publications such as the humorous magazine Punch and the Sunday Express.
According to Thelwell's obituary in the Telegraph newspaper: “He created some of the most recognisable images in equine art with his cartoons of freckled girls being bounced along on their recalcitrant spherical ponies.”
He also produced thousands of drawings of dogs and cats, anglers and sailors, indeed pretty much every facet of British life and interests.
Now, in collaboration with Norman Thelwell’s son David who is himself an artist, here is a series of limited-edition screenprints of Thelwell’s work.
These are all original screenprints. An original print is a work of art printed by hand, from a plate, block, stone, or stencil (which is the case here - screenprints are made using screen stencils) that has been created by the artist for the purpose of producing the image.
