I’m developing a new range of colourful comic-character screenprints, all featuring a figure standing, sitting or running upon a platform of flat colour.
They are designed to hang together and form a recognisable series.
The block of vivid flat colour – playing to one of the screenprinting medium’s strengths – is chosen to coincide with a single spot of colour on the character.
So far the screenprints I have made include Beano favourite Dennis the Menace running, Asterix the Gaul strolling, Oor Wullie shrugging his shoulders, Minnie the Minx tapping her foot, Olive Oyl gazing into space, Popeye looking perplexed and Betty Boop in a red dress.
As ever, the paper I’ve used is mould-made cotton paper milled in Somerset.
Characters such as Dennis the Menace and Asterix are courtesy publishers DC Thomson and Editions Albert Rene, respectively. I am the only screenprinter with arrangements with those firms to use their archive of images to make screenprints.
