Dandy favourite Korky the Cat plays with the Fab Four Beetle-mice. Remember, the Beetles were at their hey day in the early 1960s, the date of this front cover, so it represents a fusion of two giants of popular culture.
This is a four-colour screenprint, with green created by overlapping blue and yellow, for instance. I created the colour separations from the original comic.
The Dandy was published by Britain’s top comic publisher DC Thomson of Dundee – and, alongside The Beano, formed a pair of comics that were at the heart of every British child’s life in the 1950s, 60s and 70s. It was first issued in 1937, and stopped in December 2012, making it the world’s third-longest running comic.
Sales of The Dandy reached two million a week in the 1950s. When it launched, one of its great attractions was the use of speech bubbles as opposed to captions.
I am the only screenprinter allowed to plunder the fabulous comic art archives of top British comic publisher DC Thomson.
