Buy your father some grenades on Father’s Day, Sunday June 19. A screenprint of a soldier about to throw some grenades might be just what a day in your life would like – the sentiment “This looks like a job for a couple of grenades” does of course lend itself to multiple applications.
The panel is an enduring favourite – it’s taken from The Victor comic annual 1968 and I bought the comic itself in a jumble sale a couple of years later, then read it over and over again.
The Victor was published by D. C. Thomson & Co. Ltd from January 1961 until November 1992. The annual, The Victor Book for Boys, was first published in 1964 and the last edition was published in 1994.
It featured many stories in the Boy’s Own adventure catefory. In particular, each week the front cover carried a story of how a medal had been won, mostly by British or Commonwealth forces during the two world wars.
Its main characters include Alf Tupper – The Tough of the Track, I Flew With Braddock – Into Battle With Matt Braddock, Morgyn the Mighty, Gorgeous Gus, Joe Bones the Human Fly, The Hammer Man, an English medieval knight, and Captain Cadman – A cowardly British officer who, through the efforts of his batman, always came out smelling of roses
Ball Boy – The Beano’s football daft boy appeared in both comics at one point.
